Earlier today, Valve released a small patch which saw the addition of stats for Neutral items. A welcome quality of life chance, but then players started reporting a weird bug – they automatically gained or lost thousands of MMR points. From what we can tell, players who finished the match when Dota 2 coordinator was offline or right after the patch was released, are the ones who are primarily affected by this issue. If their last game ended with a victory, they gained thousands of MMR. If they lost, they lost the same amount. Many have theorized that this is due to the server trying to process matchmaking data, over and over again but ultimately failing. Each time an iteration was run, MMR was distributed.

Valve unveiled the newest update directed towards Dota 2 matchmaking system, which has been hit with several updates in recent months, with the most recent making some much-needed changes to the scaling MMR based on relative skill and the ranked game modes. Valve explained that they decided for this move because they believe players who play solo have much greater impact on the way the game is played, compared to those who enter ranked matches in a party, and will for that reason award the solo players with the ability to climb the ladder faster, while players who play in a party will see their MMR increase at a slower pace.
That is, however, something that works in theory, will that translate into the real games, however, remains to be seen. The Ranked Roles will from now on be “locked” behind a so-called ticket system. Previously, the players earned the fast queues by selecting every role, meaning they could be assigned to play any of the five roles.
Now, the Dota 2 players will earn four Ranked Roles games when selecting all the positions and will be eligible to play Ranked Roles if they pick two support boxes.

Dota 2 new matchmaking system: What it means for your MMR
MMR starts at a value of 1 point, and theoretically has no ceiling at all—which means that MMR can grow infinitely. A player can obtain his or her MMR by participating in ranked matchmaking, which is divided into six-month seasons. Fresh accounts and those that have gone through seasonal MMR resets must participate in calibration matches, in order to have themselves placed at a certain MMR value.
The new Ranked season for Dota 2 is here, bringing with it updates to role symmetry in Ranked queues and the core and support ranks, as well as a ban wave for smurf accounts and players with low behavior scores. One of the biggest changes in this update tweaks the existing matchmaking system introduced early last month , putting a bigger emphasis on role symmetry across the two teams in a match instead of prioritizing rank spread and other criteria.
An example of this is when the mid player for one team has the highest rank on their team, and the mid player on the other team has the lowest rank. Alongside the changes to matchmaking, the update also comes with a wave of bans for players that have exceptionally low behavior scores, were found to have violated the Steam Service Agreement by purchasing an account to boost their rank, and those who were caught using exploits in matches.
Valve will be issuing weekly ban waves targeting these kinds of players without notice, with the associated phone numbers of banned accounts also being permanently blacklisted to prevent them from accessing ranked matchmaking. The update also aims to reduce the usage of smurfing players using a different account, often with a much lower rank than their main account.
While alternate accounts are often used by pros looking to play anonymously or to avoid long queue times in high rank, they are also being abused by players whose main accounts are in low priority or have low behavior scores. Valve has heavily discouraged smurfing by fixing a bug that allowed a large number of users to play ranked without a unique phone number attached to their accounts, and changing the mechanism to grant Ranked access from a fixed number of matches to hours of playtime instead.
In addition, accounts that overperform their initial rank will have their MMR gains and losses per game adjusted in order to get them to their appropriate ranks faster.
Valve has changed the Dota 2 ranked role matchmaking system once again. The latest update removed separate core and support ranks and merged them back into a single rank. It sounds like the good old days.
Team MMR comes last, which is essentially the average MMR of all the players in a party. This aids the matchmaking system in compensating for large skill gaps.

The Dota 2 ranked roles update
Written by Mike Stubbsy Published on With two new entrants this week, we look at those who have made it to the highest MMR bracket. The two players, who both came to Europe after TI6 to play for Team Secret , have thrived in the European online scene, even if their results in pro matches may not have been as good as they might have hoped. However, this is still a feat that only a handful have ever achieved.
With MMR constantly changing it is often difficult to keep track of the growing list, so that’s exactly what we’ve done by gathering all the players that have hit 9K MMR at least once so far.
The new Ranked season for Dota 2 is here, bringing with it updates to teams in a match instead of prioritizing rank spread and other criteria.
We understand that some players, especially at the high end, have experienced a significant drop in matchmaking quality as a result of our recent iterations. We are committed to making matchmaking as good as it can be. For any party that includes an Immortal player, every player in that party will be considered the same rank as the highest player in that party.
We think this trade-off is worthwhile at this high level, however, because matches are unlikely to be of high quality anyways with extremely disparate skill levels within a party given the shallow pool available. Such disparity has often made the games less fun for most players involved. We expect that this will have the net effect of reducing the number of party games at the highest skill levels by some amount, but compared to how infrequent high-MMR party games were in the past, the number of party games should still be higher than the historical average.
For any five-player party, they will now only be matched against other five-player parties, regardless of any other matchmaking consideration. We are unsure if an absolute requirement like this will result in net higher quality matchmaking due to the more limited opponent spectrum available in that case, but we know this is an aspect the community talks about often and we are going to do our best to work within those constraints.
Similarly, any solo player will now only ever be considered for matches against at most one party of two. This will be a hard requirement for the matchmaker instead of a situational consideration. We will be monitoring the system after release to make sure the fixes have the intended effect. It is possible that there will be more issues to work out, so if you notice anything too far off please let us know. While this gave some loose sense of progression, it made comprehension of what medals represent more difficult.
It especially caused confusion after calibration where most players dropped medals despite winning most of their games.
Who’s in Dota 2’s 9K MMR hall of fame?
No more! And solo players will now only ever go against teams who have, at most, one party of two. Glory be!
It would be easier for teams to recruit players skilled on particular rare to see some new player comes with ideas about matchmaking and etc.
Today, Valve released an update that stated that Immortal players are now only going to be matched up with players within Divine or Immortal ranks. Prior to this, Divine players who partied with medals lower than them would often be queued up with Immortal players, which lead to even further frustration. However, this may still not be enough. It is still an acknowledgement that Valve will be making steps in the right direction.
Of course, the DOTA 2 community is not without its own solutions as well. His solution brings in the possibility of coordinated queue times to make sure that the high ranking community can all come together, at every half hour, to queue together. With the long queue times being reduced, and better quality matches, high ranked players should be able to find players to play with. We personally think that Valve could extend this even further, by gauging the top 0. Given that regions like North America have historically had problems with lower playercounts and lower numbers of players within the immortal category – you could extend it to the upper echelon of divines as well.
While still not optimal, it makes sure that even in times when fewer people are playing the game, you can still have an optimized experience. Ultimately, this is a huge problem that needs to be addressed by Valve. Valve is making steps in the right direction, but this may not be quite enough. Tweet us your thoughts on this update!
